Mother's Day is almost here, and I can't help but think about how incredible motherhood has been for me. I cherish every moment with my little one, watching her grow and discover the world. 

Additionally, my relationship with my mom has always been special, and I'm so grateful to have that same connection with my daughter. 

But as much as I adore Mother's Day and everything it stands for, I also know that every mom's journey is unique. Many journeys are far from easy. Some are incredibly painful. We need to recognize that emotions can be complex for many on Mother's Day.



Acknowledging the struggles of motherhood

My own road to motherhood was pretty unexpected, and it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I can still remember how odd my first Mother's Day felt, wondering if I even deserved all the love and attention.

I thought about all the women who have faced different challenges on their path to becoming moms, and it made me realize that Mother's Day can be so much more than just a celebration — it's also a time for understanding and empathy.

5 ways to acknowledge Mother's Day for those who may find the day painful

Here are 5 ideas to acknowledge Mother's Day for those who may find the day painful for any number of reasons:

1. Offer a listening ear 

Sometimes, the best way to support someone is just to be there for them. Offer a shoulder to lean on and let them know you are available to talk whenever they need someone to listen. Encourage those who are comfortable to share their personal experiences or memories, creating a safe space for connection and understanding.

2. Plant a tree or garden

Honor the memory of a loved one or the hope for a future child by planting a tree or garden that will grow and flourish over time. 

3. Host a self-care day 

Organize a day of pampering and relaxation, offering activities like massages, yoga, and meditation to help those struggling to find some peace and comfort. 

4. Create a memory box

Create a memory box together, filling it with mementos, photos, and messages that represent their unique journey and cherished moments.

5. Send a card

Simply acknowledging that you know the day is a difficult one for them can be enough.

As I look forward to another Mother's Day filled with love and happiness, I also take a moment to reflect on the countless journeys of women in their quest for motherhood, both joyful and challenging. 

This day can be a complex and emotional day for many individuals. It is important to recognize and honor the different circumstances and experiences of mothers and their children, and to offer support, comfort, and empathy. By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate celebration of motherhood.
